Cardinal Giovanni Battista Caprara (1733 - 1810), as can be partly deduced from the inscriptions at the foot of the portrait, had held several important lay positions (Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, Grand Dignitary of the Order of the Iron Crown and Grand ' Aquila della Legion d'Onore) and ecclesiastical (archbishop of Milan from 1802, archbishop of Jesi, legate of the Holy See on behalf of Napoleon, Apostolic Nuncio in Vienna under the pontificate of Pius VII. In May 1805 he blessed Napoleon I emperor in the Cathedral of Milan, died in Paris in 1810 and received solemn funerals.
