Anne Nancy Ward, sister of the artist James Ward, married the painter George Morland in 1786, only to separate on grounds of his cruelty. She died within two days of her husband, her health seriously compromised by his abusive treatment.
The vigorously painted dog is said to have been added by H.B. Chalon, the sitter’s brother-in-law and a contemporary of George Morland at the Royal Academy.

- Further Information: "Muller entered the RA Schools in 1788 and exhibited portraits at the RA 1789-1800. Very little is known of his life. Anne (Nancy) Ward, the sister of the painter and engraver James Ward, married the painter George Morland in 1786 but was cruelly treated by him and they separated. She was nevertheless so affected by the news of her husband's death in 1804 that she herself died three days later. The pug dog is said to have been painted by H.B. Chalon (1770-1849) who had been Morland's contemporary at the RA schools. The companion piece of her husband 'George Morland' (LL 3559) is at The Lady Lever Art Gallery."
