Thomas Haines was the proprietor of Tom's Coffee House in Russell Street, Covent Garden, from 1764 until its closure in 1814, having succeeded his father Richard. He was named after the founder, Captain Thomas West (d. 1722). By the 1760s the Coffee House had become a well-known and fashionable resort. To judge by the costume this work may be dated c.1775-80. Charles Grignion the Younger (1754-1804) was an English history and portrait painter who studied in Paris. There a few recorded works by Charles Grignion the Younger, though his portrait of George Farmer is in the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv. no. NPG 2149).
