In this painting the Sixth Shamar, or “Red Hat,” Mipam Chokyi Wangchug (1584–1630), wears the distinctive hat of his incarnation lineage within the Karma Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism. He holds the stems of lotuses that bear a sword and a book, identifying him as an emanation of the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, Manjushri. In the top-right corner is the semi-wrathful goddess Kurukulla. A group of related masters and students includes the Fifth Gyaltshab (1618–1658), the Fourth Drung ba Kunga Namgyal (b. 17th century), and Karma Chakme (1613–1678).
