The WDM1 17000 was imported in 1956, from the American Locomotive Company (ALCO), amongst the hundreds of 1950/1800 horse-power Broad Gauge Diesel Locomotives, for operation in the Eastern and South Eastern Railway Sections.
This 111.2 ton single cab locomotive was capable of hauling passenger or goods load at a maximum speed of 104 KM/Hour. About one hundred locomotives were imported for Eastern and South Eastern Railway and were engaged mainly in ore/coal freight duty, although some were dedicated to regular passenger duties too (the Howrah-Madras Mail was linked with double headed WDM1).
