After the balls were dyed and dried in the open air, they were then weaved using wooden looms. Once the pieces were woven, they were then subject to evaluation.
Such watercolours and gouaches were produced for the export market and were a kind of miniature illustrated postcards. These meticulously-illustrated depictions were mostly carried out by Cantonese artists from the late 18th to the mid-19th century.
