Seoul, South Korea

This holder for marriage documents exemplifies the remarkable skill of Qing embroiderers and the diverse range of techniques they employed. The exterior is covered with red and blue plain-weave silk, embroidered with a large 喜 (happiness) character in couched gold thread. The interior features a dragon and two bats flying over birds and goats set in a flowery landscape. These intricate compositions are embroidered using a combination of satin stitch, couching, seed stitch, long and short stitch, stem stitch, and continuous darning stitch.
