Attila József (1905-1937) : Welcome to Thomas Mann

Attila József is an honoured author of the Hungarian national literary canon. His poetry has brought along something new in the history of our literature. His approach building the poetic self is in accord with contemporary European and American endeavours. Attila József was interested in the theory of literature at the same time as T. S. Eliot, since according to him there is no serious literature without criticism putting the text in the centre of interest. In January 1937 Thomas Mann travelled to Hungary. He was invited by Samuel Fischer, the director of the publishing House Fischer Verlag and read aloud from Lotte in Weimar in a Hungarian theatre. Attila József wrote this poem addressing Thomas Mann but he could not read it aloud because the police banned it due to the last line of the poem: “A European mid people barbarous, white”. The poem refers literally to the Magic Mountain of Thomas Mann, in which the character of Loe Naphta was modelled by the Hungarian philosopher, György Lukács. Moreover, the poem also refers to the combative humanity of Thomas Mann’s Listen, Germany! (burnt by the Nazi political power.) In our Museum there are two manuscripts of the poem, one of them was typed by Attila József in his own type machine. The other is an autograph manuscript fragment in pencil with two lines that became adages.

József Attila nemzeti kánonunk kitüntetett szerzője, költészete újat hozott a magyar irodalom történetében, szemléletmódja, ahogy a költői ént felépíti, összhangban van korának európai és amerikai törekvéseivel. József Attila az a szerző, aki T. S. Eliottal egy időben az irodalom elméletével foglalkozott, mivel komolyan vehető irodalom szerinte nincs szövegközpontú kritikaírás nélkül. A Petőfi Irodalmi Múzeumban kézirataiból különgyűjtemény képződött. 1937 januárjában a már Nobel-díjas Thomas Mann Magyarországra utazott. A Fischer Verlag Kiadó magyar származású igazgatója, Samuel Fischer, meghívására érkezett, a Magyar Színházban olvasott fel egy fejezetet a Lotte Weimarban című regényéből. Üdvözlésére, József Attila, aki Fejtő Ferenc visszaemlékezései szerint szívesen írt megrendelésre, készített alkalmi verset. A költemény konkrétan utal Thomas Mann Varázshegyére, melynek Leo Naphta-ját a német szerző Lukács Györgyről mintázta, másrészt az Európa vigyázz! harcos humanizmusára. József Attila azonban nem olvashatta fel versét, a rendőrség ugyanis nem engedélyezte annak utolsó sora miatt: „Fehérek közt egy európait.”A versnek gyűjteményünkben egy gépiratos piszkozata, illetve egy autográf ceruzaírásos kézirata található. Utóbbin a mű két szállóigévé vált sorával.
