Story: 1996
The photo was taken around 1996, and was in celebration of Mr Mandela’s birthday. Instead of having a birthday party for him, we helped sponsor a birthday party in Cape Town for previously disadvantaged children. I remember it was very cold and we were in a very big shed which was part of a railway warehouse. There was a very large Lego flag which had been built and Mr Mandela had to put the last brick in it to complete the flag. We had lots of very small children around us and we were watching a performance to entertain the children. We had sponsored all the eats and drinks and Mr Mandela and I were discussing the vulnerability of the small children, many of whom were orphaned by AIDS or come from abused backgrounds. At the time I was on the board of Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
