Western rood screen, four-pass

The western rood screen, whose large elaborately designed portal forms the only access to the western choir, was only built after the completion of the choir. It corresponds to the type of a wall rood screen and can only be reached from the inner choir via two spiral staircases. Although from a formal point of view only one wall is visible, its architecture is characterised by a sophisticated plan and a remarkable deep and rich structure. The portal is preceded by a large porch vaulted in two yokes, the pointed gable of which even projects beyond the upper floor of the rood screen. While the level of the actual portal is occupied by a crucifixion scene, the gable above contains a large four-pass painting of a so-called Majestas Domini, in which Christ is depicted sitting on a throne as a world judge on the last day. The actual rood screen wall is divided to the right and left of the portal by cloverleaf-shaped arcades with central four passes.
