Milton Bradly first produced what is considered that firm's first puzzle for children around 1880, when it made The Smashed Up Locomotive--a name doubtless chosen to appeal to the boys it was aimed at. This example may be a bit newer, because it is housed in a cardboard box, rather than the earlier wooden slipcase boxes Bradley typically used. When a child assembled the puzzle, he could learn the names of many of the parts.
