Fondazione Musei Senesi
Siena, Italy

The room, decorated with multi-coloured faux marble panels and coat of arms, has been frescoed with the allegorical cycle of Aristotle, in which ethical and political messages were transmitted to the populace that frequented these spaces, which were in public use, by subjects inteded to exalt virtues and justice. The "Wheel of Barlaam" is based on a tale that can be traced back to Buddhist tradition, the story of the youg prince Josaphat who rejects a life of wealth and pleasure to embrace an ascetic existence under the guidance of the hermit Barlaam, who reveals the true meaning of life to him. The christianised version of the story included a series of apologues narrated by the ascetic to show Josaphat the vanity of earthly belongings.

  • Artist Biography: Cristoforo di Bindoccio (documented in Siena from 1361 to 1407) and Meo di Pero (documented in Siena from 1378 to 1407) are two well-known artists working often together in Siena and its surrounding churches in the second half of the 14th century. Their recognized masterpiece are the frescoes in the Sala del Manto in the old Sienese hospital Santa Maria della Scala. The scenes in Asciano combined recollections of Lorenzetti with the influences of Lippo Vanni and the descriptive style of Bartolo di Fredi, and are characterised by a narrative liveliness and the sometimes marked expressivity of the personages who, albeit with the rather dumbfounded appearance typical of the two painters' figurations, are particularly effective in rendering the episodes.
