Whist, similar to bridge, was a popular game in the Frick household. Mrs. Frick and her sister Martha Childs (Aunt Attie to the children) played often and even took lessons. Mr. Frick also played, and there are many whist instruction books in the collection dating to the 1890s. In an 1893 letter to her son Childs, away at school, Mrs. Frick said, “Attie and I are deep in whist, but every day we find it harder and harder to understand and I am afraid that at the end of the twelve lessons we shall come out behind in knowledge of the game.”
