This bedspread is mainly decorated with the floral medallion in the center, intertwining curly vines and belt-shaped pattern, among which small green leaves, chamomile flowers, butterflies and birds on branches are sporadically arranged. A central medallion surrounded by bird and floral motifs represents a common traditional Chinese design in embroidery, while intertwining vines and belt-shaped pattern are exported decorated elements which, as popular embroidered motifs emerging in the 16th and 17th centuries in UK, witnessed a wide application in the exported embroidery pieces and printed cotton fabrics in the 17th and 18th centuries, that’s when such ornamentation started to be found on Chinese satin-ground embroidery.
