One of the largest living mammals, the white rhinoceros is currently recovering from near extinction at the turn of the last century. Approximately 20,000 individuals exist of the Southern white rhino subspecies. However, there are only three known individuals left of the genetically distinct Northern white rhino subspecies. The white rhino remains highly vulnerable to poaching for their horns. Former President Theodore Roosevelt collected this specimen in 1909.
