White River Javelina (Perchoerus sp.)

Middle Oligocene. Shannon County, South Dakota, USA. In the sun-scorched Texas scrubland, there are living relics from the White River – brightly skinned omnivores who are nearly unchanged from 35 million years ago. They are javelinas, also known as peccaries. They are not “pigs” – as evidenced by the fangs and feet.
