During the early years of the 1960s, so-called Beatlemania was sweeping the United Kingdom, and the United States after the Fab Four's appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. American retailers were quick to produce and promote Beatles-related novelty items; this original Beatles wig is a great example. During those years, the long locks of the Beatles were still pretty daring for many American boys and young men; perhaps they attended a school with a dress code or were gainfully employed. Mainstream society did not yet quite accept such long hair. The Beatle wig offered, at least, a costume example of the "mop top" look. One wonders: who really bought these?
