The pictorial superificie of the work "Wild Country" (1958) became a field of free aggregations of shapes and colors. The last phase of Renato Birolli’s painting, before his eventful death in 1959, reaches an absolute freedom of composition: the painting resolves into a spot painting, where light-colour acts as a structuring element and yet does not lose its link with an objective matrix of the image. Birolli thinks of a painting that comes from the source of sensations, through a language open to the inner world, to the psychic sensations, which are substantiated in solutions that are affected by the Informal, rejecting however every gestural automatism in order to be guided by a deep conscience of a lyrical event that matures slowly in his fantasy.
