On a serene spring day, the flowery fields in an imaginary landscape host an unwitting dramatic scene of the struggle for survival, against the backdrop of a village with transalpine architecture and high snow-capped mountains. A cat violently attacks a kite which is clutching its prey in its paws, a bleeding bird shot down in flight. Ligabue pauses to describe with great realism, in the fury of the melee, the kite with raised wings and the cat with puffy fur, figures that he evidently had the opportunity to study from life. Absolute indifference reigns all around. At the bottom, on the far right of the canvas, an insect, a symbol of death, is placed near a feather lost by the prey, while four black birds hover in the sky, lugubrious.
