Chełmoński was not interested in nature subjected to the will of man, who transforms it to suit his own needs, but in the untamable natura naturans, in which God’s power of creation is manifested. Fallen by the wind, rotting old trees die where they grew, only to be reborn in the life of the young plants that take over them, possessive, devouring every inch of the earth, climbing upwards towards the light.
