William Cavendish (1748-1811) was 5th Duke of Devonshire, a British nobleman, aristocrat, politician and Lord High Treasurer of Ireland. In 1774 he married Lady Georgiana Spencer, a celebrated socialite. They lived at the family seat of Chatsworth House.

This picture was published in Le Beau Monde, or Literary and Fashionable Magazine. The image is one of a collection created by the famous Derbyshire antiquarian, Thomas Bateman (1821-1861), of Middleton by Youlgreave . Bateman organized his collection by inserting images into a 4 volume copy of Lysons Magna Britannia, Derbyshire, creating a fascinating and unique illustrated record of the county. The purchase of the collection for Derbyshire Libraries was made possible by the generous bequest of Miss Frances Webb of Whaley Bridge, a local historian, who died in December 2006.
