William Berczy, considered the best Canadian painter of his day, immortalized fur baron William McGillivray (1764-1825). McGillivray was one of the rich Scottish merchants who took over from French Canadians in the fur trade, eventually becoming head of the North West Company. X-ray examination suggests that several overpainted areas converted this work into a mourning portrait after McGillvray's wife's death in 1810.
