South Australian Maritime Museum

South Australian Maritime Museum
Port Adelaide, Australia

Left side view of a wooden wheeled model of a galloping race horse with jockey and string pulley. This piece is a component of the famous horse races deck game, one of the many deckside 'sports' organised by the Adelaide Steamship Company for their passengers.
It is made up of a welded metal frame around a bulbous wooden drum reel, tapering to an adjustable wooden foot at one end. Shaped wooden handle grip above drum, winding handle (wooden) extending from drum. Both the foot and reel are painted red, the metal frame silver, and both hand grips are unpainted. Twine on the drum is looped through a metal hook on a separate mobile wooden horse, connected back to an eyelet above the wooden foot. The winder then pulls the model along.
