Over a fifty-year career, Obering explored the aesthetic possibilities of color, form, and material, combining Minimalist rigor with influences from Renaissance painting. Window Series #4 features seven painted canvas sections arranged against a warm tan background, evoking the Renaissance notion of a painting as a window onto the world. The work demonstrates Obering’s early experiments with modular forms, overlapping strips, and subtle gaps that create fluidity and spatial depth. While immersed in New York’s conceptualist scene, she maintained a dedication to painting, later incorporating egg tempera and gold leaf into her practice. Across her career, Obering’s work balanced scientific precision, historical awareness, and poetic visual rhythm, reflecting her lifelong fascination with geometry, light, and perception.
