Windsor Castle is the oldest inhabited royal residence and the largest castle in England. Its origins date back to William the Conqueror who built a timber castle atop the chalk cliff overlooking the River Thames. It was transformed in the 12th century with the addition of royal apartments and fortifications being rebuilt in stone. Since then many monarchs have put their own imprint on the site, creating the extraordinary range of buildings captured by Aerofilms in this 1947 photograph.
