The Wing Test Hangar at the former Hucknall airfield was erected by Rolls Royce in 1944. The H-shaped building comprises two hangars for engine testing, with office and monitoring accommodation in the central range. It was here that the Merlin engine and Frank Whittle's turbojet engine, the first commercially viable jet engine, were tested and developed.
