Prototype for Winged Figure forms part of the generous Gift from Hepworth’s family consisting of 44 surviving models for finished works in plaster, aluminum and wood. This gigantic aluminium sculpture is on permanent display at the gallery. The prototype was made in St Ives in the yard of the Palais de Danse, a converted ballroom and Hepworth’s main studio and is the largest prototype by Hepworth still in existence. The final version of this prototype was mounted on the side of John Lewis on Oxford Street, London, in 1963.
