Albert Bloch spent his early years as an artist in Europe exhibiting with Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). This group was influenced by both Cubism and color theories and strove toward a "pure spiritual expression." Bloch was the only American in the circle founded by Vassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Realized during the last year of the First World War, Bloch’s Winter seems to promise a great thawing of the European landscape, and perhaps the re-emergence of the pre-war transcendental views of the artists of The Blue Rider.
