Until 1846, Friedrich Ernst Stowerroffsky worked as a forester and painted as an amateur. Later, however, he began studying art in Dresden. After graduation, he was active in Wrocław and was associated in artistic organizations. He painted realistic landscapes in most parts of Lower Silesia. The most common topic was mountain views. The presented painting shows a winter landscape in the traditions of Roantic painting. Bright snow and pastel-colored skies are juxtaposed with a dark, disturbing forest. On the right side, a small figure dragging a sled with wood is painted.
