British born artist Thomas Birch moved to America from England with his father, artist and engraver William Birch in 1794, settling in Philadelphia. He received his training in art from his father and together they collaborated on a number of projects including paintings of country estates in the region. He was one of America’s first landscape painters. Birch ultimately established a reputation for winter landscapes such as this one notable for their nostalgic representations of country life.
