Niklaus Manuel and Urs Graf brought Swiss draughtsmanship to a level that can be compared to that of the Danube School, Dürer and his circle, and the artists of the Upper Rhine. The scope of Manuel's painterly oeuvre was forever obscured by the Berne iconoclasts in 1528; however, the large number of drawing techniques used by the artist, the drawings on wood panel, the woodcuts whose blocks Jakob Burckhardt already believed to have been cut by the artist himself, and the fact that almost only finished drawings have been preserved (all existing sketches are on the versi of such drawings) indicate that the graphic medium was of great importance for Manuel. Hans Baldung Grien had the greatest artistic influence on the Berne artist; even in the recent past, their drawings were still sometimes confused. Our work is also closely related to those of Baldung in terms of subject matter as well as technique.
