Portrait of Abe Weingott in uniform. There is a handwritten note on the back, “To Dear Old Luke, With best love from Abe, Egypt 30.4.15.”

Abraham served in WWI, first in the artillery and then in the Employment Company eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant. This photo was likely taken just after he enlisted, on 24 August 1914. He embarked from Australia on 18 October 1914, posted first to Egypt for training and from there was sent to Gallipoli. He then served in France. He was wounded in action, a gunshot wound to his left leg, on 23 October 1917 in Belgium and was sent to England to recuperate. He re-joined his unit on 29 January 1918 but in March was sent to the hospital sick. According to records, Abe developed deafness. On 2 May Abe was transferred to the Employment Company where he served until he returned to Australia on 24 September 1918.
