Witold Pilecki was arrested by the functionaries of the Ministry of Public Security, the so-called 'bezpieka', an organization tasked with using terror to intimidate the society and to fight the anticommunist opposition. The victims of the 'bezpieka' were mainly members of the clandestine pro-independence movement, former AK soldiers and activists of the political opposition.
