Blanche was greatly influenced in his portraits by the English portraitists, especially Whistler. The Ponce painting, the first oil by this artist exhibited at the Paris Salon, also shows the artist's interest in atmospheric effects. The resulting composition employs different values of white, relieved only by the woman's dark gloves and fan.
