Woman Holding a Fan

This work was painted in 1920, when Xu Beihong was 25.
In that year, Xu Beihong took the exam for the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and was accepted. After completing drawing and modeling courses, he began studying under noted history painter François Flameng. This was Xu’s first oil portrait work after he went to Europe to study, and it depicts Jiang Biwei.
