This cloaklike garment, worn by a woman of the Kabylie Berber people, exhibits patterns produced through weaving, but its most visually striking design elements, the deep red expanses, were created using the plangi technique. After the cloth was woven, the white areas were bound tightly to resist the red dye bath in which the cloth was submerged. The resultant cloth is visually complex, with areas decorated with woven designs and large areas of intense red juxtaposed with white.
