While the rest of the world used bicycles as everyday transport, in the United States, the automobile was a much more practical means of transportation. By the 1920s, American bicycles were marketed to teenagers rather than adults, with most models adopting the appearance of a miniature motorcycle, known as the motobike. Rowlett’s of Richmond- retailed this 1940s Shelby (Ohio) Fox bicycle, which features a storage compartment mimicking a motorcycle’s gas tank. Leather saddle, chrome-fluted fenders and dual aluminum fender lights make this a top-of-the-line model.
