Woman Spinning

Pier Francesco Mola1650

National Academy of San Luca

National Academy of San Luca
Roma, Italy

This painting entered the Academy’s collections as part of the Fabio Rosa bequest in 1753. The female figure is probably intended to represent one of the three Fates, possibly Lachesis who measures the thread of destiny. The model, who is wearing a traditional costume common in northern Italy, may well be the painter’s mother, Elisabetta Cortesella.
