Women from Cofradía Santo Domingo Xenacoj, Sacatepéquez

In Santo Domingo Xenacoj, the attire worn by women varies, in terms of the garments they use and how they wear them, in accordance to the office they hold in the cofradía. While all of them wear overblouses, the way they wear them marks the difference between the three different offices: “la alcalde” and the texeles on the one hand, and the mortomos on the other. Those who hold the first two kinds of offices wear the overblouse, called saq’i p’ot (white huipil) or kaperaj (made with two panels), inside the morga in the front, and outside in the back part of said garment. As for the mortomos, they wear the same overblouse, but completely tucked inside themorga. Another garment whose use varies according to the office is the su’t that is placed on the head and is worn by “la alcalde” and the mortomos but not the texeles, as they wear a white veil as a distinctive garment.
