The design of the angel trumpeter that is imprinted on this tea set was created originally by Sylvia Pankhurst, daughter of the founder of the Women’s Social and Political Union, Emmeline Pankhurst. The tea set was manufactured by the firm of Williamson’s of Staffordshire, England, and first used in the WSPU refreshment room at the Prince’s Skating Rink Exhibition held at Knightsbridge in London from May 13-26, 1909. Those who wished could purchase parts or all of the set there. Later, the set was reproduced, and individual pieces could be obtained at WSPU shops throughout the city. Known pieces in this design include in various sizes a teapot, a cup and saucer, a milk jug or creamer, a cake plate, and a sugar basin.
