Encouraged by artist Alma Thomas, a young Sam Gilliam explored the possibilities of abstraction using nontraditional media such as loose, draped canvas, wood and steel. Today, Gilliam is internationally known as the premier African American color field painter, having mastered the use of large blocks of color to evoke expression without rhetoric.
