This woodcut provides a relatively realistic insight into the workplace of a telegrapher in the early 1850s, when the Morse telegraph was an established medium. The French engraver probably made the picture for a French newspaper, but it also appeared in Germany in the magazine "Illustrated Family Journal. A Weekly Magazine for Entertainment and Teaching."
