To prove that his telephone could actually transmit speech, Philipp Reis used nonsensical sentences such as "Das Pferd frisst keinen Gurkensalat" (The horse does not eat cucumber salad) or "Die Sonne ist von Kupfer" (The sun is made of copper) in a demonstration.
