Wooden Headrest

This is a pillow used to rest one’s head, and varies in materials and usage. Pillows are usually made by sewing a pillowcase with diverse fabric before stuffing it with cotton, hairs, or grains. There are also wooden pillows made by carving a log or a wooden board; bamboo pillows made of bamboo; and porcelain pillows made by baking clay. Cloth pillows are made by stuffing padding into a pillowcase and sealing it before wrapping the surface with a single layer of a cotton cover. Round or square decorations are sewn at both ends, and determined the overall shape. Wooden pillows were usually used in summer since the coolness of wood offered a pleasant sensation amid the heat, while the solid wood also provided acupressure effects. Wooden pillows include those carved from a thick log; those with four wooden plates interlocked in a square and decorations carved at the center; those that can be folded and unfolded; and those with a drawer at one side to store small objects. Wooden pillows were made of wood with good grain or soft texture, such as sawleaf zelkova and paulownia wood, in various shapes including a circle, a square, a rectangle, a semicircle, and animals. Some wooden pillows were made by threading together wooden pieces.
