Ballot "boxes" were made out of several different types of material including tin, glass, and wood, although generally wooden varieties were the most common. Again in those areas where women could vote for certain municipal offices but not in state or federal contests, separate receptacles were needed for each gender. If women were to use the same ballot box as men, they could slip in ballots for offices that they were not entitled to.
