Woolworth Boycott Broadside

The first sit-ins by the Congress of Racial Equality in Chicago in 1943 were intended to change the attitudes of business owners. During the period of 1955 – 1968, acts of nonviolent protest and civil disobedience produced confrontations between activists and government authorities. Crisis situations that highlighted the inequalities faced by African Americans often drew immediate attention from federal, state, and local governments, and from businesses and educational institutions.
