KIM Chongyung (1915-1982) was a pioneering artist of Korean abstract sculpture who in the 1950s and onward abandoned his early conformity to the realism of the then academic style and pursued pure sculpture by placing importance on the innate mechanisms and structures of materials. He strived to emphasize the intrinsic attributes of materials and attempted to embody the so-called “aesthetics of non-angularity”. This is probably the reason that his works lend an ambience of primitive naivety and simplicity. This work well exemplifies his principle of non-symmetry superbly applied to his organic forms. Each of the three ridges of exquisite sensuousness resembles the bosom of a woman, and the careful and sincere sculpting heightens the quality of the work even more.
