Workbags first became a popular domestic accessory during the eighteenth century and their development in style would reflect the changing social role of women over time. They were originally large fabric bags and usually homemade. This later example was made by London-based Mappin & Webb (established 1774), which remains a leading luxury goods company. It opens to reveal implements for needlework and letter writing, with a compartment specially designed for each item.
