A law passed in 1885 stipulated that boys as young as 12 could work in coal mines. They had to separate the coal from the impurities by hand. At the age of 14, they were also allowed to enter the mines. In a roundabout way, there were always children much younger than that working in the mines. Washington, USA, 1900.
