These workers were pouring aluminum into casts for automobile parts, something that would have been unimaginable before 1888. Prior to Charles Martin Hall’s discovery, producing aluminum was so expensive that it was considered a semiprecious metal. But freed from that constraint, aluminum became a crucial material in everything from roofing and building supplies to cooking utensils and airplanes.
